Vintage Buckhannon

This week, it's another DOUBLE-SHOT exclusive straight out of the Vintage Buckhannon Vault.

Photo 1:

Bird's Eye View of Buckhannon, July 11, 1884

This extremely rare photograph was captured on July 11, 1884 by brothers Thomas and Walter Biscoe from atop the southwestern hillside where St. Joseph's Hospital is today.

Heading east on W Main Street, the first Upshur County Courthouse can be seen on the righthand side; The old Baptist Church Steeple on Locust Street is seen center-left; The First Methodist Episcopal Church's steeple at the corner of E Main and S Florida Streets is visible in the distant top right corner (where City Hall sits today).

Upshur County's first courthouse was completed in 1854. The structure was damaged three times in the first six months by fire and saw heavy abuse during the Civil War. The building was demolished in 1898 and replaced with our current Courthouse.

Photo 2:

Real Photo Postcard of the Arlington Hotel, 1910

This real photo postcard from 1910 depicts the Arlington Hotel on E Main Street, which was built in 1908.

Revisit us here every Tuesday to see new additions as we continue to build this virtual online pictorial for our community featuring the landmarks, people and relics of Upshur County's bygone days.
