BUCKHANNON - City Hall was light on public access Tuesday evening, March 14th, as the Buckhannon City Council met to review and approve the city's annual budget.

The overall budget amount was approved for $6,481,585, with Public Safety (police, fire) commanding the highest allocation of 45.6%. The Streets Department, which is responsible for the upkeep of streets, sidewalks and maintenance, comprised 25.8% of the total budget.

The city had previously held multiple budget working sessions to create the general fund budget. It's worth noting that water, sewer, and waste have separate budgets and funding sources as they are enterprise boards and were not included in the sessions.

A synopsis presentation of the budget was delivered by City Finance Director Amberle Jenkins to City Council. Watch the complete video segment, which includes councilmember comments/questions below.

Additionally, the council approved a $40,000 contribution to the Upshur County Development Authority, which is an annual occurrence. Mayor Robbie Skinner recused himself from voting for its inclusion due to his role as the Authority's executive director.

The fiscal year 2023-2024 budget was unanimously approved and will take effect on July 1st.
