Chief Deputy Mike Coffman Receives Purple Heart from Upshur County Commission for Actions on June 16

Commissioner Sam Nolte, Upshur County Chief Deputy Mike Coffman, Commission President Kristie Tenney, Upshur County Sheriff Virgil Miller and Commissioner Doug Bush

BUCKHANNON - During the December 15th Upshur County Commission meeting, two individuals were recognized for their actions during the active shooter situation that occurred during the morning of June 16th, 2022 on I-79 near exit 99 in Lewis County.

Commissioner Sam Nolte, Upshur County Deputy Director for Homeland Security Derek Long, Upshur County Sheriff Virgil Miller, Commission President Kristie Tenney and Commissioner Doug Bush

Upshur County Deputy Director for Homeland Security Derek Long was recognized for his actions in keeping people away from the shooter's vicinity. He then drove Chief Deputy Coffman to Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.

Coffman was shot in the leg by 38-year-old Matthew Brevosky of Grindstone, Pennsylvania during the incident that had all lanes of traffic on I-79 shut down temporarily near Weston. Coffman was directing traffic away from the shooter when he was shot.

The Upshur County Commission surprised Long and Coffman with the presentations.
