BUCKHANNON - The Great American Smokeout is an event held by the American Cancer Society on the third Thursday every November where individuals can begin a journey toward a tobacco/vape-free life. Thousands of people who smoke across the country will take an important step toward a healthier life while reducing their cancer risk.

During the November 10th Upshur County Commission meeting, Amanda Hayes, Secretary of the Upshur County Tobacco Prevention Coalition announced the Coalition's new approach for the community this year.

“Every year, we do some kind of giveaway centered around the turkey theme because it’s closer to Thanksgiving. And this year we thought a little bit outside the box and we had a local artist (Sheri Gaudet) paint a photo-op of a cutout turkey that’s been put near Chase Bank on the sidewalk. It's a photo of a turkey and some pumpkins. You can put your face in there and snap a photo.” Hayes said.

“We encourage everybody to do that and post it to their social media with the hashtag #upshurquitcoldturkey. We will draw from those posts and the winner will receive a gift card, so we hope people will participate in that," she said.
