BUCKHANNON - During the November 17th City Council meeting, Mayor Robbie Skinner expressed his disappointment regarding the Upshur County Schools excess levy election results. The current levy will not continue after it expires in July of 2024.
"I do want to express… I am disappointed we did not pass the school levy. I think there was a lot of misinformation out there. I know that our Council took action on a resolution… but I really hope that we as a community can come together by May of 2024 to pass our school levy so there are no interrupted funds for kids because that is our most important resource… are the youth of this community…," Skinner Said.
During the Buckhannon City Council meeting on Thursday, October 6th, Council unanimously voted via a roll-call vote to approve the Upshur County Schools levy renewal. The levy renewal would have authorized the continuation of additional levies totaling $3,248,000, and would have continued to support:
Upshur County Public Library
Upshur County Extension Office and 4-H
Stockert Youth & Community Center
Annual student passes for the WV Wildlife Center
Annual student passes for the Upshur County Recreational Park
Upshur County student accident insurance
Substitute teacher pay
Student-related community services
Extracurriculars
Extended employee agreements
2,998 voted for the levy with 3,164 voting against.
