Tucker County was formed from Randolph County and named for Henry St. George Tucker Sr., a Virginia soldier, statesman and jurist on March 7, 1856.


Also on this day in West Virginia history, a decade later:

On March 7, 1866, the U. S. Congress recognized and consented to the transfer of Berkeley and Jefferson counties from Virginia to West Virginia.
