Vintage Buckhannon

This week, it's another DOUBLE-SHOT exclusive straight out of the Vintage Buckhannon Vault.

Photo 1:

Bird's Eye View of Buckhannon, July 11, 1884

This extremely rare image was captured on July 11, 1884 by brothers Thomas and Walter Biscoe from atop Buckhannon's southwestern hillside (where St. Joseph's Hospital is today). For perspective, it would be another twenty-five years before the historic storefronts we all know and love would begin to forge Main Street's permanent landscape.

The old Courthouse is visible on the left; The First Presbyterian Church still stands on Locust Street across from the Courthouse (built in 1879, the church was approximately five years old when the image was captured); The old Methodist Episcopal Church steeple can also be seen up the street from the old courthouse, which is where City Hall is located today.

This is the second of two surviving images captured on July 11, 1884 by the Biscoe brothers. We posted the first image on January 17th, 2023 to the Vintage Buckhannon pictorial, but in case you missed it:

Vintage Postcard - A Northeast View Along Main Street, c. 1913

This rare postcard from c. 1913 depicts a northeastward view along Main Street in Buckhannon, W.Va.
