Vintage Buckhannon

This week, it's a TRIPLE-SHOT exclusive straight out of the Vintage Buckhannon Vault as we visit the old Rainbow Restaurant.

Photo 1: A View of Main Street - 1950

Vintage Buckhannon

This rare photograph depicts a view of Main Street as it appeared looking eastward in 1950.

In 1952, two years after this image was captured, Mollie Culp established the Rainbow Restaurant, which was located where the Courthouse Annex sits today. The popular spot was unique to its name with interior "rainbow" lighting in a coffered ceiling.

Unfortunately, the building complex, which also included the Poundstone Drug Store, Prosecuting Attorney's Office, and Chadwick's Restaurant, was destroyed by fire in 1979.

Photo 3:

This photograph from 1961 depicts a scene from the bar inside the Rainbow Restaurant.

Revisit us here every Tuesday to see new additions as we continue to build this virtual online pictorial for our community featuring the landmarks, people and relics of Upshur County's bygone days.

STAY TUNED: We have a very special Vintage Buckhannon Exclusive coming up in two weeks! You don't want to miss it!
