BUCKHANNON - It's not uncommon to be struck by the allure of a beautiful orchid while perusing the lawn and garden section of a favorite big-box store. However, bringing one of these delicate plants home without the proper knowledge can be a daunting task.

Fortunately, the Publisher of Mountaineer News (that's me!) is an orchid enthusiast with nearly two decades of experience in cultivation.

Despite experiencing setbacks, such as the unfortunate infestation that claimed most of my collection in 2008 after acquiring a Winston Churchill paphiopedilum, I remain committed to sharing my passion and expertise with others via various online beginner forums.

As a side note, it's worth mentioning that Phalaenopsis, or "moth orchids," is the only orchid species you'll find in our local establishments.

Now, to digress a bit, there has been a recent trend in orchid care instructions that suggests watering with ice cubes. While this may seem like a convenient and modern approach, it's important to consider the natural habitat of orchids and how this method can potentially harm their delicate root systems.

Orchids are typically found in tropical regions, where they thrive in warm and humid environments. Sudden exposure to cold water can cause shock to their roots, which can ultimately lead to damage or even death of the plant. Therefore, placing ice cubes on orchids is not a recommended method of watering. It will actually do more harm than good.

Ice cubes may not provide enough water. Orchids require consistent moisture to thrive, and placing a few ice cubes on the plant may not provide enough water. The amount of water an orchid needs depends on several factors, including the size of the plant, the type of orchid, and the environment in which it's growing.

Ice cubes can affect the overall health of the plant. Orchids that are not properly watered can develop a range of problems, including yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and even death. Using improper watering methods, such as placing ice cubes on the plant, can contribute to these issues.

The most effective method is to water the plant's roots thoroughly, allowing the water to drain out of the bottom of the pot. This ensures that the roots receive the proper amount of water and prevents over-watering. Also, If the potting mix is too heavy and retains too much moisture, it can lead to rot, so replace it with a lighter medium if needed for adequate drainage and ventilation.

A helpful indicator that an orchid is in need of hydration is a noticeable change in the color of its roots. When you see them dry and dull-hued, apply lukewarm water until they become a vibrant lime green color (at least at the root tips). Repeat as needed.

While misting the leaves of the plant can also provide supplementary moisture, it's essential to exercise caution and prevent water from entering the area where the leaves emerge from the rhizome, which can also lead to rot.

While placing ice cubes on your orchids may seem like a convenient way to water your plant, it's not recommended. Instead, follow the proper instructions for watering your orchid to ensure that it stays healthy and beautiful for years to come.
