Upshur County Commission Approves Resolution to Resurface Tennis Courts at Parks and Rec Complex

BUCKHANNON - During the December 1st Upshur County Commission meeting, Commission recognized the need for a universally accessible play environment to meet the widest range of needs and abilities, and therefore adopted a resolution for resurfacing the tennis courts at the Parks and Recreation Complex.

The County will participate in the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) for the enhancement.

Alternative lining options will be implemented to play a variety of sports, and the Upshur County Commission, along with the Upshur County Board of Education, desire to create a competitive sports arena available for current and future Upshur County students.

Commission authorized the acceptance of funds to the state of West Virginia for the LWCF program in the amount of $171,500, and committed 50% matching share for the total project in the amount of $171,500, which is earmarked within the financial stabilization fund.

Upshur County Commission President Kristie Tenney was appointed to serve as the official representative of the Upshur County Commission in administering the LWCF program, including providing necessary additional information to the State government.

The Commission hopes to get the project started this coming spring (2023), but it may not begin until spring of 2024 due to the grant approval process, and clarifying that the Upshur County BOE is on board with the financial commitment.

County Commissioner Sam Nolte stated that, with the LWCF grant, the financial commitments from the County would be in the neighborhood of less than $90,000 and the same (less than $90,000) for the BOE.
